If you are booking a conference in the Square Mile you will end up looking at the same handful of operators. This page sets out who they are, how large their rooms are and what each one includes, so you can shortlist quickly. All capacities below are the figures each operator publishes on its own website. We have included our own two City venues on the same terms.

Convene is the largest operator in the City by number of sites. It states that it owns and operates 11 properties across London, eight of them in the Square Mile. etc.venues is now part of Convene; the etc.venues sites are still presented under that name, on Convene’s website.

Catering and audio visual are in-house, with our own engineers on site. Both venues take exhibition stands alongside the main room: 35 at Basinghall, 25 at The Minster Building.
Start with the room, not the brand. Theatre capacity is the fastest filter. Above roughly 500 delegates the City choice narrows to a small number of large halls. Between 200 and 450, which is where most City conferences sit, almost every operator on this page is in play and the decision comes down to the other factors below.
Check what in-house actually means. Every operator here says catering and AV are included. They are not all the same arrangement. Some run their own kitchens and their own technical teams; some use a resident production partner. Ask who employs the engineer who will be in the room on the day, and ask the same about the chef.
Ask how many people you will deal with. On a multi-room or multi-day booking the number of handovers between sales, operations, catering and AV matters more than almost anything on a specification sheet. Ask who your contact is on the morning of the event, and whether it is the same person who quoted you.
Count the walk from the station. Delegates arriving from outside London will route to a terminus. In the Square Mile the practical difference between venues is usually a few minutes on foot, but for a 9am start with 300 people it is worth knowing.
Ask about exhibition space early. If you need stands alongside the main room, that requirement will eliminate more venues than capacity will.
