Near 44 Hallam Street: restaurants, hotels and things to do in Fitzrovia

44 Hallam Street is a Grade II listed conference venue on a quiet Georgian street where Fitzrovia meets Marylebone, with BBC Broadcasting House two blocks south and Harley Street one block west. This is a practical guide for anyone organising or attending an event there: where to get breakfast before an early start, where to send delegates for lunch, what to do after the last session, and where to stay if the conference runs over more than a day. Everything below is within an eleven-minute walk of the front door at W1W 6JJ, and the walking times were measured from the venue entrance.

If you have not yet seen the venue itself, the 44 Hallam Street venue page has the floorplans, capacities and a 360° tour. For how to get here by Tube, rail and bus, the Great Portland Street and Oxford Circus pages cover both stations in detail.

Before the event: breakfast and coffee near Great Portland Street

Most delegates arrive through Great Portland Street or Oxford Circus, and the two-minute stretch of Great Portland Street between the station and the venue is where the morning coffee happens. GAIL's Bakery at number 125 is the closest and the quickest. Black Sheep Coffee, built into the station itself, is the one to grab on the way out of the Tube. Caravan Fitzrovia at number 152 opens for breakfast and has the space for a sit-down pre-meeting with a speaker or a client. If you need somewhere smarter to meet an important guest before a 9am start, Riding House Fitzrovia on Great Titchfield Street serves breakfast from 7.30am on weekdays and takes bookings.

The venue serves its own tea, coffee and breakfast pastries as part of the day delegate rate, so none of this is necessary — but organisers often want to know where to point a speaker who has arrived an hour early.

Lunch and dinner near 44 Hallam Street: the Fitzrovia restaurants

Catering at 44 Hallam Street is in-house, so most conferences eat on site. But Fitzrovia is one of the strongest restaurant neighbourhoods in London, and when organisers ask where to take a client, a speaker or a small group afterwards, the answer is usually within five minutes of the door. These are the ones we would book, in walking order from the venue.

  • Clipstone, 5 Clipstone Street – 2 minutes. Fitzrovia's standout restaurant: a sister to Portland with an inventive, seasonal menu and a good-value early-evening set. Closed Sunday and Monday, so book ahead for Tuesday to Saturday.
  • Portland, 113 Great Portland Street – 2 minutes. Relaxed fine dining with a set lunch that makes it the obvious client lunch between sessions. Closed Sunday and Monday.
  • Caravan Fitzrovia, 152 Great Portland Street – 2 minutes. All-day restaurant and bar, brunch to dinner, with the space for a table of ten and a menu that handles mixed dietary requirements without fuss.
  • Bennie Restaurant & Bar, 102 Great Portland Street – 4 minutes. Italian, popular with the local offices for a relaxed lunch.
  • Riding House Fitzrovia, 43–51 Great Titchfield Street – 5 minutes. Works as well at lunch as at breakfast; takes bookings for groups.
  • Naroon Fitzrovia, 65 Great Titchfield Street – 5 minutes. Persian food with a strong vegetarian list.
  • Aces Foodcraft, 8 Pearson Square – 6 minutes. Counter dining with an inventive tasting menu, for a small group that wants something memorable.
  • 64 Goodge Street – 7 minutes. Chic French restaurant from the Clipstone and Portland team.
  • 74 Charlotte Street – 7 minutes. Ben Murphy's restaurant and wine bar on Fitzrovia's restaurant row.
  • Akoko, 21 Berners Street – 8 minutes. Michelin-starred West African fine dining; the one to book for a dinner that people will talk about.
  • Carousel and Cometa, 19–23 Charlotte Street – 9 minutes. A different guest chef each week at Carousel, Mexican seafood at Cometa next door.
  • Tendril, 5 Princes Street – 9 minutes, by Oxford Circus. Mostly vegan, and the answer when a group has several plant-based diners.

Walk west along Weymouth Street instead and you are on Marylebone High Street in eight minutes, where the picks are Orrery (French fine dining with a roof terrace), Fischer's (a Viennese grand café, open from 7.30am so it also works for a breakfast meeting) and St John Marylebone on Marylebone Lane. Lita on Paddington Street, a live-fire restaurant, is nine minutes; Trishna, the Michelin-starred Indian on Blandford Street, is ten; and The Hart, the pub-restaurant from the team behind The Pelican, is eleven.

Pubs and bars near Hallam Street

The closest pub to the venue is The Horse & Groom at 128 Great Portland Street, three minutes away. The one we would send people to is The Jackalope at 43 Weymouth Mews, also three minutes: a proper three-room pub on a quiet mews with a good cask list, and Liu Xiaomian's Sichuan noodle bar in the basement for anyone who wants to eat. The Yorkshire Grey on Langham Street (four minutes) and The Crown & Sceptre on Great Titchfield Street (five) are the classic Fitzrovia pubs with room for a group. For cocktails, Artesian at The Langham, five minutes away, is one of London's best-known bars, and Maya, the subterranean Mexican bar under Cavita on Wigmore Street, is nine.

After the event: things to do near Fitzrovia and Oxford Circus

The venue's quiet location is a selling point during the day, but it is also five minutes from one of the busiest streets in Europe. Oxford Street is now car-free between Selfridges and Great Portland Street, which makes the walk down from the venue a pleasant one rather than an exercise in dodging buses. The UK's largest Harry Potter shop opens at 134–140 Oxford Street on 4 November 2026, and the Christmas lights run through to early January. We have written separately about what the pedestrianised Oxford Street means for delegates.

Closer to hand, RIBA at 66 Portland Place is two minutes away: a free architecture exhibition space, a public library and a quiet café in one of London's best Art Deco buildings. BBC Broadcasting House is three minutes and runs public tours. Regent's Park is seven minutes to the Park Square gate, with Queen Mary's Rose Garden and the Open Air Theatre ten minutes beyond that; in summer it is the obvious place to send a group between the end of the conference and a dinner booking. Wigmore Hall on Wigmore Street, seven minutes away, holds lunchtime and evening chamber concerts and is one of the most civilised ways to finish a day in the West End.

For an evening drinks reception, the venue's own Regent Suite holds up to 180 standing. Groups that want to carry on afterwards have The Langham's Artesian bar five minutes away, and Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia's restaurant row, ten minutes south-east.

  • The Langham, 1C Portland Place – 5 minutes. Five-star, and the right address for a keynote speaker or a chief executive.
  • Meliá White House, Albany Street – 8 minutes. Four-star, beside Regent's Park and Great Portland Street station.

All six take direct bookings; for a delegate block of ten rooms or more, ask us when you book the venue and we will put you in touch with the hotel's groups desk.

Practical: printing, pharmacy, post and cash

The question organisers ask most often on the morning of an event is where to print something. Kall Kwik at 55 Great Titchfield Street, five minutes away, does same-day name badges, agendas and signage. Ryman at 54–56 Great Portland Street covers stationery, printing and parcels. Fitzrovia Pharmacy at 210 Great Portland Street has a post office counter under the same roof, four minutes from the venue, and Future Pharmacy on Great Portland Street is the nearest chemist at three. Cash machines are at Great Portland Street station and outside Ryman.
