London’s Most Sustainable Venues
For 5 years now we have been planting trees in Dorset, as part of an ongoing quest to ensure that our sustainable venues’ environmental footprint is as light as possible. Trees fix carbon, carbon is released by our activities and is the biggest single cause of global warming. Even though we use only certified ‘green electricity’ delegates and supplies coming and going from our event venues burn fossil fuels and so add carbon. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says protecting and restoring the world’s forests is critical to limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5C.
Why We Are Planting More Trees
We are trying to do our bit, this year we have planted a mixture of Field maple, Sea Buckthorne, White Alba and Italian Alder, and Holme Oak. 250 trees in total.
As part of this programme, we audit the health of our existing trees each winter, all 490 of them. We are super proud that well over 90% survived an incredibly harsh winter. This is particularly important when so many tree planting programmes are such abject failures ie the West Norfolk council planted 6000 trees last May, and when audited it was found that over 90% had died. Similarly, many pledges to plant trees are money-making exercises as organisations plant commercial forestry designed to be harvested and have a negligible positive environmental impact. Analysis carried out by Simon Lewis, professor of climate change at UCL found that nearly half the land pledged for restoration in a German government scheme was in fact destined for commercial plantations.
