Environmental Sustainability at London's B Corp Certified Venues

Cavendish Venues is the only specialist conference and meeting venue operator in London to hold B Corp certification - an independent, audited standard, not a logo we awarded ourselves. Sustainability has been a core value here since 1995.

B Corp Certified — the Only Specialist Venue Operator in London

We are a certified B Corporation, with a verified B Impact score of 86.7 — comfortably above the 80-point pass mark, and inside the top 15% globally. Certification took our leadership team the best part of two years and examined five areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers. Every claim had to be evidenced with written policies, training records, board minutes and supplier agreements. Not mission statements. Not marketing copy.

For event organisers under pressure to show that sustainability commitments reach into the supply chain, that matters. Booking a B Corp venue is a line in your CSR reporting that stands up to scrutiny, because an external body has already scrutinised it.

A Supply Base Built Around the Corner

The quickest way to cut the carbon in an event is to stop moving food across the country. We have spent years pulling our supply base in towards our London venues.

  • Catering is by our group partner Mayfair Catering, who work with Angry Monk — up to 63% of the produce they use is rescued “imperfect” food that would otherwise have been thrown away.
  • Canapés come from City Canapé Company, whose kitchen is at 1 Hardwick Street, EC1R — minutes from our City venues. Made fresh daily and delivered by zero-emission cargo bike.
  • All our meat is sourced from a single farm less than 50km from our London venues, Red Tractor assured. Fish is MSC-certified; tea and coffee are Fairtrade.
  • Our on-site herb garden, planted in 2025, produces 83 plants and saves around 1,300 transport miles a year.
  • Consolidating deliveries has cut vehicle movements to our venues by 19%.
  • GMO-free since 2006. Palm-oil-free since 2022.

More on how this works in practice on our event catering page.

A Tree for Every Booking

We have planted over 2,500 native trees in Dorset in partnership with the Country Landowners’ Association — ash, birch, oak, alder, hawthorn, holly, field maple, willow, wild cherry and blackthorn. One tree goes in for every meeting and event we host, and has done since the programme started. You can read the whole story, including what we have learned about what tree planting does and does not achieve, in our tree planting article.

Waste: Zero to Landfill, and Falling

  • Recycling rates have risen from 79% in 2013 to 88% in 2024.
  • 34 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill, avoiding 27 tonnes of CO₂.
  • Recycling routes established for every waste stream, including laminated exhibitor materials — the things most venues quietly bin.
  • Single-use plastic water bottles removed in favour of on-site filtration, keeping an estimated 225,000 bottles out of landfill.
  • Gold accreditation for landfill-neutral status with First Mile, 2021.

Food Waste: the Hardest Problem in Conference Catering

Hospitality accounts for around 12% of all food waste, and a conference venue over-caters by up to 20% by design — because the alternative is running out. That gap is the single biggest sustainability problem in our industry, and it is the one we have put most effort into.

  • Since April 2025 we have sold surplus event food through Too Good To Go at £3.90 a meal, rather than binning it. The entire sales price goes to our staff.
  • Our chefs redesign menus every three months against the Soil Association’s seasonal guides, so quantities match what is actually available and fresh.
  • The partnership has cut the food waste we send to compost by 80%.
  • We are trialling AI-assisted smart bins that weigh and photograph what comes back, so portion forecasting improves event by event.
  • In March 2025 we hosted the National Food Waste Conference at 22 Duchess Mews, bringing together food waste processors, producers, waste management firms, local authorities and charities.

The longer version is in our article on reducing food waste.

Energy and Buildings

  • 100% renewable electricity since 2002, on a green tariff.
  • A 10% year-on-year energy reduction target, in place since 2004.
  • Manned coffee stations instead of machines, which are markedly less energy efficient.
  • At 1 Basinghall Avenue, our newest venue: EPC rating A, BREEAM Excellent and a NABERS 4.5-star rating.
  • London’s first biophilic conference venue design.

Venue by venue detail is in our sustainable venues article.

Menus That Lower the Footprint

We run Meat-Free Fridays across our venues, which cut emissions by 73%, land use by 75% and water use by 50% against the equivalent meat menu. Under the Coolfood Pledge no menu we write exceeds 30% animal-based protein. Where every delegate takes the vegetarian menu, we take £5 per person off the price — the saving belongs to the client who made the choice.
