National Marine Week is here!

July 27, 2020

Running from the 28th of July to the 12th of August, to take advantage of the tides, National Marine Week is a chance to celebrate the wonderful wildlife found in the seas around the UK, and our relationship with this incredible habitat that surrounds us.

Wildlife Trusts around the UK will be holding sea-themed events, from snorkelling through the waters of Wembury Bay in Devon, to exploring the rockpools of Yorkshire’s Boggle Hole on a seashore safari, or even picnicking with a porpoise on the clifftops of North Wales.

No matter where you are in the UK, there’s plenty to celebrate: our seas are home to over half of all our wildlife (more than 30,000 species), contribute to flood management and water purification, and provide the oxygen for every other breath you take!

And remember, in the UK you’re never more than 70 miles from the sea.

Visit The Wildlife Trusts website for more info.

Restoring nature can help soak up carbon emissions, whilst contributing many additional benefits. When healthy, our natural habitats can reduce the risk of flooding, help prevent coastal erosion, improve people’s health and wellbeing, as well as maintain healthy soils, clean water and the pollinators needed for our crops – and therefore sustain us.

Nature itself is at risk from climate change, but if helped to recover, its potential to store carbon does mean it can help us to turn the tide on the climate catastrophe.

As a chain of sustainable conference venues in London, here at Cavendish Conference Venues we care about our environment and the damage we are causing. Climate change is a serious worldwide issue, which is why we are trying our best to minimise the impact on the environment by leading the way in conference, meeting and event sustainability.

We continue to build on our position as London’s leading sustainable conference venues with:

  • Absolute commitment to our zero landfill policy, all food waste is now composted in Mitcham, South East London.
  • Year on year reductions in all waste streams. E.g. our menus were redesigned to offer more choice and less food waste.
  • Year on year reductions in all inputs (energy, water, etc) in the conference centres – E.g. we are now using manned coffee stations rather than coffee machines, as the latter are far more energy inefficient. Localization of our supplier base to minimize carbon footprint – all meat is now sourced from a single farm less than 50km from all venues.
  • All energy used in the venue is sustainably sourced (i.e. exempted from governments carbon levy)

Sustainability, we have been doing it for nigh on 20 years now, although we don’t boast as such we do believe we are the meeting industry’s most formidable advocate in this area. Why not hold your next event at one of our green conference venues.
