London’s First Outstanding Biophilic Conference Venue

Biophilic Conference Venue. Sustainable by design. Inspired by nature.

Located just behind Oxford Circus Underground Station 44 Hallam Street has for some time been recognised as one of London’s most sustainable conference venue. Just last week we were shortlisted for the sustainable venue awards.

Biophilic Design: At the Heart of Our Conference Venue

44 Hallam Street is London’s first biophilic conference venue. Biophilic design connects people with nature through architecture and interiors that reduce stress, improve air quality, and promote well-being. With over 500 plants carefully placed throughout the venue, we create a calming, cognitive-enhancing space for all delegates.

In line with our ethical purchasing policy, most of these plants are sourced from Horti House, a supplier committed to local, low-transport-mile horticulture.

Fresh Thinking: Grown and Sourced Sustainably

We grow our own herbs using bespoke ultra efficient led lighting we grow many of our own herbs. To reduce food miles, we’ve committed to localising our supplier base by a minimum of 10% each year.

Our sourcing policy includes:

  • Meat from Kent farms
  • English-only wines and beers
  • Coffee from a local roaster
  • Seasonal menus updated quarterly using the Soil Association’s seasonal food calculator

Reducing Waste at Our Biophilic Conference Venue

Food waste is actively monitored and reduced through:

  • Menu redesigns
  • A French Buffet format (smaller portions, more variety)
  • A strong partnership with The Angry Monk, which supplies us with “wonky” or surplus produce—63% of our fruit and veg comes from them (as of Feb 2025)
  • Partnering with the Too Good To Go app, a global B Corp initiative that connects users with leftover meals at discounted prices—all revenue goes to our catering staff

Thanks to these efforts, we’ve reduced food waste by 60% year on year.

Offsetting the Impact of Every Delegate

As part of an endeavour to offset the carbon generated by delegates visiting our venue, 44 Hallam Street plants a tree for every enquiry received. So far, we have planted 2,023 trees – a mix of whips and semi mature as per the Barcham Trees CO2 calculator to maximise effective carbon fixing. This combines with our exclusive use of Green Energy. We now partner with Good Energy, the only B Corp certified UK energy supplier.

Vegetarian Menus for a Sustainable Future

We believe that a non-meat diet has huge environmental benefits and now actively encourage all clients to choose our vegetarian menus. Our biophilic conference venue offers a discount of £10 per delegate when a conference is 100% vegetarian.

Certified Ethical Sourcing

In January 2025, we removed all palm oil from our menus in line with WWF recommendations. Our sourcing policies ensure:

  • Fairtrade-certified tea and coffee
  • Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainable fish
  • Red Tractor-certified meat

We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far—but we’re not stopping here. We are working toward:

  • Sourcing exclusively from UK suppliers
  • Eliminating all remaining single-use items, including catering slip cloths (currently our only exception)
