As conference organisers, we are responsible for staying in tune with the changes in cultures, being in tune with differing ways in how we live our lives and being sympathetic and understanding to gender inclusivity is of paramount importance in today’s daily living. So, we have decided to put together a few tips to make everyone feel welcome at your events.

1. Avoid gendering people

When addressing the audience or an individual, ensure you use inclusive language such as ‘everyone’ or simply refer to a person by their name when introducing a speaker unless you have their permission to use the person’s pronouns.

2. Add pronouns to name tags

Adding pronouns to name tags will make your audience feel valued. It also shows your attendees you are moving at the same pace as technology practices, such as social media platforms giving their users the ability to state their pronouns preferences.

3. Include gender-diverse speakers

We all know diverse speakers are a necessity for any public event. This includes race, age, gender, and other sectors of diversity. Having more diverse speakers will give your audience a richer insight as they will see how different diverse groups are.

4. Create diverse and inclusive content

To create an inclusive programme, it is important to think if the topics are diverse enough to interest a wide range of attendees and be sure it does not focus too much on one gender. Consider how to combine a mixture of oral presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and breakout sessions.

5. Hire Suppliers who have inclusive policies

Hiring suppliers that have inclusion at the heart of their business models as they will be committed to applying LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices.
