A Roadmap to Net Zero for the Events Industry 2022-2050

May 24, 2022

Last year we here at Cavendish Venues have signed the Net Carbon Initiative to be part of Net Zero Carbon Events, which was mentioned in our November blog, and we are pleased to say there is progress! As we have received a draft of the roadmap to Net Zero for events industry. All our venues should be all net zero by 2050.

Net Zero Carbon Events

The Net Zero Carbon Events initiative was first launched in August 2021 with the goal to bring the global events industry together on a common journey to net zero. More than 350 entities from around the world are supporting this initiative. In November 2021 the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge to be net zero by 2050, mainly designed towards event operators who deliver the events such as organisers, venues and service providers was launched.

The 2022-2050 Roadmap will be launched in November 2022 at COP27 in Egypt. As the sustainability agenda evolves and more data becomes available, the roadmap will be updated. Future iterations will address a wider group of stakeholders, including exhibiting companies, who are important to the industry’s ability to decarbonise.

Why was the Roadmap developed?

The reason the Roadmap was developed because the events industry contains many stockholders delivering many different types of event – from large trade shows and exhibitions, to festivals and live music or sporting events, to smaller business events and conferences, with many other in between. The focus in the development of the roadmap has been business events sector, which includes consideration of the exhibition area and exhibitors.

Next steps

Over the upcoming months as the 2022-2050 Roadmap is finalised, the next stages of the Net Zero Carbon events initiative will be developed. This includes:

  • Measurement: define methodologies and metrics
  • Reporting: develop reporting template to track and communicate progress
  • Offsetting: further refinement of the industry hierarchy and a collaborative approach
  • Action areas: facilitate groups to drive progress on action areas, including regional approaches

We will know more of the Roadmap progress on the 8th June, stay tuned! In the meantime you can find out the latest on Net Zero Carbon Events
