Eco Warrior Margaret Thatcher…

April 15, 2013

The news of Margaret Thatcher’s death has prompted a great deal of response from the British public and global audiences. Despite the controversial opinions on Thatcher’s policies and time as Prime Minister, it has been brought to my attention that the Iron Lady was in fact one of the first global leaders to highlight the dangers of climate change, making her a pioneer of green causes.

During the 1980’s Thatcher was campaigning against global warming having graduated Oxford University with a degree in Chemistry. In 1988 Thatcher spoke of the rise in greenhouse gases which, she says ‘are creating  global heat trap which could lead to climatic instability.’

A year later Thatcher went on to dedicate a key speech to the UN on global warming and in turn warned that the rising levels of CO2 were ‘likely to be more fundamental and more widespread than anything we have known’.

Deforestation was also a subject that Thatcher was conscious of stating that ‘we are seeing the destruction on a vast scale of tropical forests which are uniquely able to remove carbon dioxide from the air’.  Understanding that environmental and economic health were ‘totally dependent on each other’ gave evidence that her policies were not necessarily more concerned with commerce than carbon emissions.

More than fifteen years on we are still trying to offset our carbon footprint and help others reduce theirs.
