Christmas lights in London

December 5, 2019

London is positively sparkling thanks to its festive facelift in the build-up to Christmas as it gets decked out with enough LEDs to give even Las Vegas a run for its money. Whether you’re making an excursion to one of capital’s many Christmas markets and fairs, planning to slip and slide like Torville and Dean at one of London’s many ice rinks, or even doing a spot of shopping at one of London’s best Christmas shops, make sure you take a detour to one of the truly spectacular illuminations lighting up our city. Layer up, grab your gloves and prepare to see London at its festive best. It’s sure to be lit.

The best Christmas lights in London

1. Oxford Street Christmas Lights

You know Christmas is coming when Oxford Street is transformed by sparkly, glowing lights. This year, for the first time in six years, the lights are having a complete overhaul. Get ready to feast your peepers on 27 LED ‘light curtains’ which will be draped down the length of the street and made up of a total of 222,000 lights

2. Carnaby Christmas Lights

This year Carnaby Street’s Christmas lights are spotlighting (ahem) one of the pressing issues of our times. Carnaby has collaborated with ocean conservation charity Project 0 for this sustainable display. Expect dazzling underwater scenes featuring 5-metre long whale that blows bubbles, giant clusters of jellyfish and 200 illuminated vampire squid. What’s more, it’s all been made using recycled and reusable materials.

3. Covent Garden Christmas

Covent Garden’s cobbled piazza and market buildings are even more irresistible at this time of year. Get ready for another huge hand-picked Christmas tree glowing with 30,000 festive lights, 115,000 lights sparkling across the Piazza and its adjoining streets and the usual big reindeer sculpture.

4. Regent Street Christmas Lights

The grand shopping sweep gets its usual festive makeover with garlands of lights down the length of the road. See those glorious golden angels make their comeback soaring high above Regent Street. The big switch-on is on Thursday November 14 and, if previous years are anything to go by, it will involve loads of festive events and activities. Doing the honours this year are Heart Breakfast presenters Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, Irish band The Script and singer songwriter Maisie Peters.

5. Christmas at Kew Gardens

See the botanical garden’s weird and wonderful plants all lit up. Plus this year, the mile-long, twinkling trail holds some new surprises. There will be a shower of silvery vines at the Treetop Walkway while down below you’ll be able to spy folkloric illuminations of mythical fairy creatures and Will-o’the Wisps.
